This is my second picture book, crafted in 2022.
This vibrant A4-sized creation, tailored for children aged 3 years, captures the essence of early school days, following Adrian’s captivating journey through the adventures of daily attendance.
The creative process
After writing the story, I started drawing the kids in my nephew’s class.
Once I felt I knew their faces well enough, I started experimenting with different approaches.
I used the thumbnail technique to sketch out what would go on each page after decided on a style and before moving on to the pencil stage.
Final sketch
Before I began painting each page, I experimented with lighting in grayscale.
Searching for the color palette.
My goals for the second book
When I started working on this new book, I had the following goals in mind:
Including lettering
Adding textures
Playing with the depth of field.
More characters
In my debut book, I designed only two adults and three children. That’s why I wanted to include more children in this book, depicting them from a variety of angles, including up, down, profile, and 3/4.
I also wanted them to express a variety of emotions.
Double-page illustrations
There was only one double-page illustration in the first book, so I wanted to create more for this. My main goal was to create atmospheres with plenty of details that weren’t too overwhelming.
